- Do you have a family member with a disability?
- Does your financial and legal plan include provisions to protect potential benefits?
- Have you structured your assets to grow, preserve and protect them for your family member?
- Do you have a comprehensive plan that includes your own retirement, other needs and other personal goals?
There are significant areas that a family with a special needs member has to address that are often overlooked by professionals who do not have personal experience. Steps should usually be taken to protect government benefits. Beneficiary designations must be handled correctly to avoid loss of benefits. Certain saving and investing vehicles may be prohibited. Families usually take steps to create assets to maintain a high quality of life for their special needs family member.
Rob Wrubel, CFP®, AIF® is a Senior Investment Consultant with Cascade Investment Group. Rob works with families with a special needs member on investment management and financial planning.

Join us for our Blueprints: Planning for Special Needs Families Monthly Workshops
Blueprints helps families with special needs members build strong financial and legal plans. Many parents and family members don’t know where to start to protect available government benefits, get out of debt and build funds to maintain a high quality of life for their loved one with special needs.
The process is broken up into nine manageable steps, or Building Blocks, and each one focuses on a crucial planning element. Since each Building Block is self-contained, the workshops can be taken based on interest and attendance for all, although encouraged, isn’t required. The workshops are free, but seating is limited.

Protect Your Family, the first release in the Blueprints series, was written to help families with a special needs member answer a simple question – “What type of life insurance should I buy for my family?” Author Rob Wrubel gives these families the financial and emotional tools to understand how to buy life insurance without wasting money on a product that does not work for them. His book demonstrates how to calculate their insurance needs and reviews the different types of policies available on the market today.
